Looking for a great place to live and work?

Working in Children’s or Adults Social Care in Powys isn’t an easy job; you’ll face many of the same challenges that social workers experience everywhere in the UK. However you’ll be facing them in a beautiful part of the UK with some of the most affordable housing in the country.

Powys County Council is a Unitary Authority which serves a population of some 132,000 residents scattered over an area of some 2,000 square miles in mid Wales; making us one of the most sparsely populated areas in Wales and England. Within that total population, just under 25,000 of people are under the age of 25.

We don’t have a Starbucks on every street corner but Powys has many excellent schools, attractive property prices, lively towns, and fantastic scenery that simultaneously takes your breath away and gives you a big dose of fresh air. And rest assured, we do have a number of independent cafes selling amazing coffee!

Our main offices are based in the market towns of Welshpool, Newtown, Llandrindod Wells, Brecon and

Ystradgynlais with our HQ in the Victorian Spa town of Llandrindod Wells. Welshpool is within one hour of the M6 motorway and is on a regular rail service from Shrewsbury and Birmingham. Llandrindod Wells is less than 1 hour from the Victorian seaside town of Aberystwyth and only 1½ hours from the West Midlands.

And if you like mountains, the Brecon Beacons rest within the south of the county and the Snowdonia National Park is only a few minutes’ drive from our northwest boundary.

Within the county, we have excellent theatres, a vibrant Welsh cultural heritage, thriving arts and artisan scenes, a wide variety of pubs and places to eat out (including two Michelin-starred restaurants) and a wealth of community based clubs and societies that will give you and your family a warm welcome.

In addition, we are also home to some of the best festivals in the UK. The Hay Festival of Literature is one with an international reputation which attracts top writers and celebrities. And the Green man festival in the south of the county is rapidly becoming one of the top boutique festivals on the summer music circuit. In the north of the county, Machynlleth Comedy Festival regularly attracts the finest line-up seen outside Edinburgh.

Children’s and Adults Social Care in Powys

The Social Care teams (we have separate Adults and Children’s teams) are relatively small but friendly and supportive units that work on a locality basis. In addition to a generous salary - Newly Qualified Social Workers earn between £29,909 and £31,401 while Team Managers earn between £42,806 and £44,697 - we offer Social Care staff up to a £8,000 relocation package (permanent posts), family friendly policies, a generous lease car scheme, an assisted car purchase scheme and travel expenses.

We also offer welfare loans, up to 28 days annual leave and many more benefits.

Increasingly, we are working more closely with the Powys Teaching Health Board, with a number of integrated teams, and working towards more joined up working with partners across the county. We also have strong ties with the voluntary and independent sectors as we aim to deliver high quality services for our clients and build resilience within individuals and communities. Within the council, we try to work as ‘agilely’ and flexibly as possible (using the best ICT equipment) and many of our staff work from different locations – and at times from home – depending on the needs of the clients. This can help with balancing the requirements of the services with a good quality of life.

Within Powys County Council we wish to see of our staff continuing their learning and development as they work with our clients and we are pleased to support the personal and professional development of our employees. Opportunities to learn the Welsh language are also offered to our staff if they wish to do so.
